Exploring the Country’s Ancient Past
Greece doesn’t need any further introduction. This is the land that gave birth to democracy, freedom, legendary philosophers, and Alexander the Great. Greece helped lay the foundations for the Western World. As a student of classics, I learn about Greece every single day. Naturally, I always want to visit the country and actually see the places that I’ve only read about in my books. My 2021 trip to Greece was actually my second time in the country. I first visited back in 2018 on a high school classics trip. Ever since then, I’ve fallen in love with this country. Greece is blessed with some of the most hospitable people in the world, one of the richest cultures, and of course some of the best food you’ll ever put in your mouth.
My second trip to Greece was with an archaeology tour group led by a professor from the University of Cincinnati and two wonderful native Greeks. We travelled to various ancient sites in the mainland located in the regions of Arcadia, Attica, Elis, and Phocis. Each site had its own incredible and unique history. When you visit these places, you feel much more in tune with the past. You can almost hear the echoes of life. This is a big reason why I will never get tired of visiting ancient sites. They make me appreciate my subject much more and brings me closer to the past.
The Greece 2021 page is dedicated to the country’s ancient history. While I won’t be talking much about the modern towns (since that wasn’t the focus of the trip), I will definitely be writing about them when I visit Greece in the future. Even if you’re not a history fan, I’m sure you’ll still get something out of these posts. It’s always important to learn more about the past in order to truly understand the present. But don’t worry, I’ll try not to make it boring ;)
Greece, I love you, and I look forward to meeting you again in the future!
